Use ERD Designer from Claude or ChatGPT
Collaborate with Claude or ChatGPT regarding your database design, then watch while it appears in ERD Designer: tables, columns, types, keys, relationships, drawn in real-time as you collaborate with AI. You can manually make changes to the diagram yourself, or you can instruct AI to do it.
Start a new design. Add ERD Designer to your chat (below), then ask: "Design a database for a small veterinary clinic and show it in ERD Designer." The chat gives you a link, and one click opens the design. If you don't have an account yet, signing up is free. The link must be opened within three days of being generated, and can be opened only once; if it has expired or been used, propose the design again.
Work on a diagram you already have. Open it in ERD Designer, open the AI panel and choose Connect Claude or ChatGPT. Give the chat the code that appears. This will connect the chat to your diagram in ERD Designer. From then on, the chat’s changes show up on ERD Designer's canvas.
If you have purchased AI Assist. Our designers feel that AI Assist is superior to working with an AI chat, so while you have AI Assists remaining, the AI panel does not offer Connect Claude or ChatGPT. A chat can still connect through a design link (DIA-), and once connected it can open your other diagrams.
Adding ERD Designer to Claude: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. Name it ERD Designer, enter https://erddesigner.com/mcp, and leave sign-in off.
Adding it to ChatGPT: Settings → Apps & Connectors → developer mode → Create, with the same address and no authentication.
AI connection capability is included in every ERD Designer plan, including the free Basic plan. Generating DDL needs Pro, and logical diagrams need Advanced. The conversation runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT account and does not require ERD Designer's AI Assist capability.
A design opened from the chat's link is saved to your ERD Designer account when it opens. After that, and on a diagram you opened yourself, the chat's changes are not saved until you save the diagram or ask the chat to save it, and each one can be undone with Undo. Choose Disconnect in the AI panel to end the connection at any time.
When a connection does not work

| The chat says the code is not valid or has expired | A code lasts 10 minutes and works once. Choose Connect Claude or ChatGPT again for a new code, and give the chat the code now on screen. |
| The chat says ERD Designer is not open, or did not answer | Bring the ERD Designer tab you connected from to the front (a browser may pause a tab in the background) and ask the chat to try again. If you closed the tab, open ERD Designer again and connect with a new code. |
| The chat says the connection has ended | A connection ends after 2 hours unused, when you disconnect or connect again, when you switch between your own account and a workgroup, when you switch your subscription to another computer, when your plan no longer includes connecting, and whenever ERD Designer is updated. Connect again with a new code. |
| The chat says your plan does not include something | Connecting is included in every plan, but some changes need more — generating DDL needs Pro, and logical diagrams need Advanced. See Choose a Plan in ERD Designer. |
